Ecologist Alert in Europe due to Transgenic Flies Release

Transgenic Flies www.radandesintec.com/en

Several ecological organizations across Europe have reported this week the plans of the British company Oxitec, who has the intention to release almost 2 million transgenic olive flies.Led by Greenpeace, these organizations state the company has requested the permit to the corresponding local authorities. Their intention is to free about 5.000 flies per week near Tarragona during one year. The genetic manipulation is made to combat the olive fly pest. If it succeeds, it would diminish the damages caused by these flies to the olive producers. In case local authorities approve the measure it will be the first time something similar is carried out in the European Union. The ecologists state the experiment is so dangerous as the insects may escape from the selected area and, if so, there would be no turning back, if it spreads to other natural environments.
