In Spain 528 species of flies are known. Although they don’t bite, they may be responsible for more than 100 different diseases.
Species can be divided into four main groups:
- Muscidae, whose best-known speciesis the housefly (Musca domestica).
- Sarcophagidae, known as the Flesh Fly (Sarcophaga variegata). Its size and gray make it unmistakable. They feed on corpses and their appearance in our homes is spectacular and unpleasant.
- Calliphoridae, they are the famous Green Flies (Lucina caesar) feeding on faeces and especially organic matter in decomposition.
- Faniidae, also a classic of our homes. It is the little house fly (Fania canicularis). They place in the middle of the room and feed ondecaying substances.
Fly Control is very popular and has a long tradition in our country: plastic bags filled with water or lemon skins with cloves have arelative effectiveness. Household insecticides solve the problem promptly, but we must take precautions.
We always recommended as the most effective method cleaning organic matter. We must also close the windows before the sun gets hot, because flies love getting in through sunny windows. The use of mosquito nets is another good solution.
